Better late than never; or, Day 2: American Gods

Day 2’s category: “A book you wish more people were reading and talking about.” Without a doubt, for me, that’s Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. It follows Shadow, a small-time criminal whose only joy is his wife, Laura, until he goes to prison and she gets killed in a car accident right before his release…along with her lover, who happens to be Shadow’s best friend. Shadow ends up embroiled in a war between the gods of the ancient pantheons against the new beliefs of modern American culture: technology, communication, etc. It really gives a new perspective on what we hold sacred.
